WAMU 88.5 Launches DCentric.org

Local blogger and long-time resident Anna John to author blog about race and class in the District

WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- WAMU 88.5 announced today the launch of DCentric, a blog about race and class in the District. The blog, authored by Anna John, is part of NPR's 13-station web-based project, Project Argo, designed to facilitate member stations expanding public media to a wider online audience.

"This blog furthers our mission to foster an engaged and connected local community," said WAMU 88.5 General Manager Caryn Mathes. "I believe that Anna's passion and commitment to the District will serve her well as she examines how the city is changing."

DCentric will cover a variety of topics--including culture, government, media, history, and neighborhoods in D.C.--with the overarching focus on race and class in the District and the many cultures that are represented here.

"I love challenging people's perceptions about this city," said Anna John. "I want to tell D.C.'s story to the world. It's a misunderstood city; it's a stereotyped city. I would love for everyone to learn about the D.C. that I know."

Anna John is the founder and editor of SepiaMutiny.com, a website for the South Asian diaspora, and is also a former digital consultant for The Washington Post. She holds an M.A. in Political Management from The George Washington University, and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California.

The NPR Argo Network is a collection of websites by NPR member stations committed to strengthening local journalism. The Argo project is a pilot program funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

American University's radio station since 1961, WAMU 88.5 is the leading public radio station for NPR news and information in the greater Washington, D.C., area. With more than 735,000 listeners in the Washington-Baltimore region, WAMU 88.5 is "your NPR news station in the nation's capital." WAMU also broadcasts from 88.3 Ocean City on the Delmarva Peninsula and in Washington on three HD channels -- the flagship frequency at 88.5-1; WAMU's Bluegrass Country, a bluegrass and Americana station, at 88.5-2; and Intersection at 88.5-3, a station where new music, science, and stories converge.
