Of the 50 million or more Americans with disabilities, less
WHY: than 25 percent of them exercise
regularly. At the same time, research shows that physical
activity and participation in sports can
improve one's overall quality of life. When veterans of the
Iraqi and Afghanistan conflicts --who
have suffered life-changing physical impairments - work hard
to improve their physical condition,
they improve their prospects for long-term health.

John Jones, who will be on field accepting the award,
describes it this way: "Disabled Sports USA
has been an important part of my life. While in the National
Naval Hospital in Bethesda, just days
after being injured in 2005, I was visited by the director of
the organization, who promised he would
take me skiing as soon as I was released. I thought the man
was crazy. He assured me life would
go on-and it did. Almost a year later --after two leg
amputations and forty surgeries --I was on the
slopes in Colorado ripping down a mountain. If it were not
for Disabled Sports USA, I wouldn't be
where I am today. I credit them for giving me my life back!"
