Daniel Pearl Foundation Issues Call for Musicians Worldwide to Join in the 9th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days to be Held October 1 - 31

LOS ANGELES, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Daniel Pearl Foundation today issued a call for musicians around the world to join in "Harmony for Humanity" by participating in the 9th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days which will be held October 1 - 31, 2010.

Every October for the past eight years, thousands of professional and amateur musicians from every musical genre have dedicated their performances around their common humanity inspired by the legacy of journalist/musician Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal South Asia Bureau Chief, who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan shortly after 9/11. Centered around Danny's October birthday, participating musicians commemorate his life and work by using the universal language of music to spread a message of hope that brings people together in a united stand for peace and against the culture of violence. Since World Music Days' inception in 2002, more than 4,900 concerts in 102 countries have been dedicated.

World Music Days is an awareness-raising initiative that involves no cost to participate, nor is it a fundraising event. Musicians are invited to log on to http://www.danielpearlmusicdays.org/ and register their already existing or specially planned October performances, and then make a brief dedication at their event from the stage or in the printed program in support of the theme of "Harmony for Humanity." Daniel Pearl World Music Days website features an interactive world map with all participating events, and allows artists to promote their events and music via individual Artist Profile Pages, which feature bios, photos and videos, as well as links to artist websites and social networking pages.

"Danny was a talented musician who joined musical groups in every community he visited. He firmly believed in the power of music to unite people," said Judea and Ruth Pearl, parents of Daniel Pearl and Co-Founders of the Daniel Pearl Foundation. "Musicians can simply dedicate a song or entire performance from stage or in the printed program to inspire their audiences with the inevitable triumph of humanity over hate and violence."

"Last year, artists at more than 1,550 concerts in 79 countries took part in this global initiative," said World Music Days' Program Director Paul Karlsen. "We also welcome Tribute Events that take place the other eleven months during the year, and offer an alternative way to participate for those who might not have any scheduled performances during October and would like to be part of this program."

The Daniel Pearl World Music Days Honorary Committee includes Sir Elton John, Itzhak Perlman, Herbie Hancock, R.E.M., Zubin Meta, Alison Krauss, Matisyahu, Steve Reich, Ravi Shankar, Mark O'Connor among other distinguished musicians. The full list is featured at our website.

The Daniel Pearl Foundation http://www.danielpearl.org/ was formed in 2002 in memory of journalist/musician Daniel Pearl to promote the ideals that inspired his life and work. It works domestically and internationally to promote dialogue and understanding, to counter cultural and religious hatred, to encourage responsible and balanced journalism, and to promote peace through music.
