FRIDAY, APRIL 9: 3-D MOVIES
Profile America -- Friday, April 9th. Millions of Americans have been thrilled by watching the big hit movie "Avatar" in 3-D. Some may think the recent use of the three-dimensional effect in movies marks a new development. However, the first experiments in 3-D film making go back to 1922. The first rush of popular 3-D movies occurred in the 1950s. The first 3-D feature-length film released by a major studio was the "House of Wax," starring Vincent Price, which opened this weekend in 1953 at New York's Paramount Theater. The film used a Polaroid technique and required special glasses to view. That year, almost one-in-three Americans went to the movies every week, compared to today, when we see an average of five movies a year. Profile America is presented by the U.S. Census Bureau, now conducting the 2010 Census.
