'Sharing Miracles' Television Program to Feature Boston Red Sox Manager Terry Francona

'Sharing Miracles' Television Program to Feature Boston Red Sox Manager Terry Francona

WASHINGTON, April 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Two-time World Series champion Terry Francona will be featured on April's episode of Sharing Miracles - a 30-minute public affairs television program that tells the compelling and inspirational stories of real patients. Sharing Miracles airs on more than 300 television stations nationwide.

Francona - widely credited with breaking "the curse of the Bambino" in his first year in Boston - has led the Red Sox to World Series victory twice since being named manager in 2004, making him the first manager to ever win his first eight games in the Series. He now boasts the second-most wins of any manager in franchise history.

However, Francona almost didn't make it to Boston. In 2002, he was recovering from knee surgery when he boarded a cross-country flight. Upon arriving, he began to suffer from shortness of breath and numbness. His condition worsened, and upon arriving home, he went straight to the hospital and learned that he was suffering from a pulmonary embolism. This led to a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a potentially fatal condition that compromises his circulatory system and requires constant monitoring.

In this month's Sharing Miracles, he talks about life with DVT and chronic knee problems. "I've had my share of health issues and I know that I'm fortunate to be here," he acknowledges. "I was a little bit dumb and a little bit more than stubborn to have gotten on that plane and waited to go to the hospital, but fortunately I was young enough and strong enough to fight that initial embolism."

Not every patient is so lucky. That's why America's pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies currently have more than 300 new medicines in development to treat pulmonary diseases, like DVT, and stroke.

Francona adds about his experience: "I think that I had good perspective on life before all this, but now I feel even more fortunate to be here." Just as glad are the millions of Red Sox fans who watched Francona lead the team to the victory that had eluded them for 86 years.

Also appearing on the program to talk about Francona's success as a manager are World Series champion Jon Lester, who currently pitches for the Red Sox, and baseball great Darryl Strawberry, who knew Francona as a player before he transitioned to coaching.

In addition, Leave it to Beaver star Jerry Mathers and Super Bowl champion Jerome Bettis appear on the program to talk about how the Partnership for Prescription Assistance can help uninsured Americans find information about patient assistance programs that may help them to get the medicines they need for free or nearly free.

Previous episodes of Sharing Miracles have featured Bettis and Mathers as well as actor Danny Glover, who suffered from epilepsy; Academy Award-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden, an advocate of breast cancer awareness; legendary Major League Baseball manager and cancer survivor Joe Torre; Grammy Award-winning country music superstar Naomi Judd, who overcame Hepatitis C; pioneering rapper and actor Ice-T, who speaks about his battle with heart disease; baseball great Darryl Strawberry, who twice beat colon cancer; Super Bowl Champion Tedy Bruschi, who recovered from a stroke to return to professional football; former Philadelphia Phillies star and ESPN commentator John Kruk, who overcame testicular cancer; Emmy Award-winning actor Joey Pantoliano, who suffers from clinical depression; Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Mike Ditka, who suffers from heart disease; and Aaron Boone, a baseball star who returned to the field after undergoing open-heart surgery.

Other guests on the show have included two-time NCAA tournament-winning University of Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun, who has overcome cancer three times; legendary college football coach Bobby Bowden, who lives with diabetes; Boston Red Sox star pitcher Jon Lester, who has battled non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; NBA Hall-of-Famer Dominique Wilkins, who has diabetes; Emmy-nominated former star of Family Ties Meredith Baxter, who survived breast cancer; Olympic gold medal winners Mark Spitz (high cholesterol), Bruce Jenner (attention deficit disorder), and Greg Louganis (HIV); syndicated television talk show host Montel Williams, who suffers from multiple sclerosis; pop icon and Broadway star Deborah Gibson, who has suffered from devastating anxiety attacks; and Pro Football Hall-of-Famer and Super Bowl Champion Len Dawson, who survived prostate cancer.
