Wale Named One of GQ's Men of the Year As Debut Album 'Attention Deficit' Nears Top of the Charts
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- When D.C. hometown hip-hop hero Wale performs at halftime of the December 27th Dallas Cowboys-Washington Redskins game, it will be a dream come true for the D.C.-born son of Nigerian immigrants who is well-known as a fervent Redskins fan. After wrapping his tour with Jay-Z, the first D.C. rapper to earn national attention in more than a decade will celebrate his homecoming and his debut album, Attention Deficit (Allido/Interscope), with fans of his beloved football team. At halftime of the game at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, he will perform a medley of "Chillin'" and "Pretty Girls," the album's current single, which features Gucci Mane and Weensey of Backyard Band, a legendary go-go group from the D.C. area.
"It's exciting to have Wale performing at FedEx Field," said Washington Redskins WR Santana Moss. "I'm really happy that a local rapper from the D.C. area will be performing at a Redskins game. Wale is an upcoming star who has performed with Jay-Z and with many other artists in the business. He'll do a great job providing excitement and entertainment for our crowd. It will be a great halftime show."
Wale was recently named one of GQ's 2009 Men of the Year, dubbed one of the "Gangsta Killers of the Year" with Drake and Kid Cudi for helping to kill off the "gangsta" rap persona. Attention Deficit has enjoyed a remarkable and critically acclaimed start since its November 10th release, including debuting at #2 on iTunes, behind only 50 Cent. The album peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hip-hop/R&B chart, #2 Rap album chart, and #21 on the Top 200 albums chart. More than a few celebrities, including a number of NFL players, have taken to Twitter to talk about Attention Deficit, which earned recognition on the site as a "trending topic" around its release date.
