Cox Receives Henry Pace Jr. Award for its Work Opportunities to the Disabled
~This marks the 4th straight year Cox has received this award~
CHESAPEAKE, Va., Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- For the fourth year in a row, Cox Communications has received the coveted "Employer of the Year Award" from Chesapeake System Services. Cox received this award for creating work opportunities for people with severe developmental disabilities.
"We are so proud to have received this award again. The individuals we work with through Chesapeake Service Systems are top-notch folks and they do a great job for us," said Cox Senior Vice President and General Manager Gary McCollum.
Providing work to those with disabilities in the local community has been an important initiative at Cox for several years. Cox provides opportunities for people with disabilities to work on a variety of tasks including assembly and packaging work. Duties are performed at a Cox warehouse facility as well as at the Chesapeake Service Systems headquarters.
"We began this partnership with CSS in 1997 as a result of a need to have certain devices disassembled. That first project put 10 people with disabilities to work and saved Cox $150,000," added McCollum. Today, Cox provides work opportunities to more than 130 people from the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.
Cox received the Henry Pace Jr. Award on Thursday, December 3 at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia. CSS is a private-nonprofit organization formed to provide vocational opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. CSS provides this award program annually to recognize companies making strides in providing employment opportunities for disabled persons who may otherwise be unable to work.
