AVATAR World and U.S. Premieres Tap RealD 3D

AVATAR World and U.S. Premieres Tap RealD 3D

First Ever 3D Showing at Famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The world and U.S. premieres of Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron's highly-anticipated AVATAR are being shown in industry-leading RealD 3D. The U.S. premiere in Los Angeles on December 16, 2009, will see the legendary Grauman's Chinese Theatre upgraded to RealD 3D using the company's XL Cinema System, marking the first time 3D has been displayed in the opulent theatre. The Mann Chinese was one of RealD's flagship installations and has been a showcase for RealD 3D for films to-date.

"We are excited that this landmark event is taking place using RealD's 3D technology at one of our first ever installation locations," said Michael V. Lewis, Chairman and CEO of RealD. "This film sets a new bar for 3D and we can't wait for fans all over the world to experience AVATAR in RealD 3D on our world's largest 3D platform beginning December 18th."

The world premiere of AVATAR held on December 10th also featured RealD's XL Cinema System powering the Odeon Leicester Square in London. A capacity crowd of celebrities and VIP guests experienced the epic adventure in crisp, clear RealD 3D, the UK and Europe's preferred 3D system.

RealD recently announced that it crossed the 100 million milestone for attendance at RealD 3D-equipped theatres, generating over $1 billion at the box office. The company continues to grow at an industry-leading clip, tallying 200% growth in the 2009 calendar year, and today has a 3D cinema platform that includes over 9,500 screens under contract and 4,800 screens installed in 48 countries with 300 exhibition partners.

AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar®-winning director of "Titanic," first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.
