Mays Family Gives Permission for Late 'Pitchman' Commercials to Continue
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Those affiliated with the "As Seen on TV" infomercial business have experienced a great loss -- the passing of the greatest pitchman of all time, friend and colleague, Billy Mays. Mays passed away on Sunday, June 28, leaving behind his wife, Deborah, son, Billy III, and daughter, Elizabeth. He was laid to rest in his hometown of McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania on Friday, July 3.
The family would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of overwhelming support that has been bestowed upon them. Billy Mays, the pitchman, who the industry insiders and consumers grew to love on television -- with his blue shirt, khaki pants, black beard and booming voice -- lives on. His smiling face and turned-up thumbs have become woven into the fabric of our lives.
"Out of respect for Billy's family, most commercials were temporarily pulled off the air as his loss was mourned. While the mourning and healing process will continue for the family, they have graciously given permission for all the people, inventors, companies and corporations to continue using his likeness on television and packaging pursuant to and honoring all existing agreements that he had in place. The family hopes this will be done respectfully and at an appropriate time because they strongly believe this is what Billy would have wanted," according to the attorney for Billy Mays and Mays Promotions Inc., Roger Pliakas.
"It is important to understand that Billy believed in every product he sold, and he loved nothing more than bringing helpful products to people at a great savings. He always enjoyed meeting his loyal fans and taking time to really talk to everyday people," said his wife Deborah.
"Furthermore, Mays' new Discovery Channel hit series "PITCHMEN" with his co-star and long-time friend, Anthony "Sully" Sullivan, brought him great joy to know that he possessed the ability to help turn inventors' dreams into reality. Billy was so much more than just a consummate spokesperson. He was a wonderful, caring family man with a heart of gold who was humbled by his success and never let it get in the way of just being who he was -- Billy Mays. He will be greatly missed by fans and friends worldwide," Pliakas said.
