HBO Latin Film Festival Screens Sex Abuse Documentary
NEW YORK, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Stephanie Rauber's first person documentary, Dance Around the Pool, is premiering July 30th at the HBO New York International Latino Film Festival. Over ten years in the making, the film depicts Ms. Rauber as she journeys to confront the man who inflicted years of sex abuse upon her and her sister- a journey made all the more difficult because the perpetrator is their own father, Aloisio Rauber.
Rauber began the project in 1999, after receiving a letter from her ailing father from his self-imposed exile in Rio de Janeiro. Nearing death, he battled an ever-increasing fear of damnation, which compelled him to seek the counsel of a priest. The priest advised Aloisio to plead for forgiveness from his daughters. When his letter arrived at the director's sister's (Paola Rauber) home, the pair had been estranged from their father for over twenty years.
After the initial shock of their father's renewed contact, the women decided to seize the opportunity to see their father for a last time before he died. Fearing they'd be too emotional to absorb what they'd encounter in Rio de Janeiro, they took along a video camera to record the event. After coming back and reviewing the footage, Rauber was immediately aware of the potential to reach out and affect other child sex abuse victims with her story. Latino Public Broadcasting came forward to fund further filming, and production on Dance Around the Pool began in earnest.
The filmmaking team includes producer, Ron Cohen. Cohen produced this season's acclaimed MTV docu-series, "16 & Pregnant."
To coincide with the release of the film, Stephanie has started to develop an outreach program that will involve teacher/caregiver training and community awareness campaigns.
