NEW YORK, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- COMEDY CENTRAL earned 14 nominations, besting its previous nomination record of 12, in the 2008-2009 Primetime Emmy Awards competition, it was announced today by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS).
Eleven-time Emmy-winner (six times for program and five for writing) "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" the network's unique news parody series, is nominated this year in five categories: Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Series and Chuck O'Neil, singled out for the sixth year-in-a-row for Outstanding Directing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Series. Two additional nominations came in the Picture Editing category, one each for Graham Knox Frazier and Einar Westerlund. This brings the grand total of Primetime Emmy nominations for the "Daily Show" to 32. The program is also a two-time winner of the prestigious Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting.
"The Colbert Report," with Stephen Colbert assuming a dismissive, Bill O'Reilly-like persona while commenting on the issues of the day, received three Emmy Award nominations: Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Series, a category in which it won its first Emmy last year, and Director Jim Hoskinson was cited for Outstanding Directing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Series. The show has been nominated in each of these categories for three years-in-a-row; its total number of nominations now stands at 15. The show has also been honored with the prestigious Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting.
"A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!," Stephen Colbert's one-hour original musical holiday special with appearances and performances by some of Americas top musical talent, received Emmy nominations in three categories: Art Direction, Picture Editing and for Original Music And Lyrics.
Three-time Emmy-winner "South Park," the adult animation phenomenon, home to Kyle, Stan, Kenny and Cartman, received its ninth Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program. Nominated for the "Margaritaville" episode, the show in its 13th season remains COMEDY CENTRAL's highest-rated show.
Honored with the network's first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series, Sarah Silverman stars in the "The Sarah Silverman Program" acting out her absurd daily life, by means of an array of scripted scenes, animation and song.
Comedycentral.com has received its second nomination for a Primetime Emmy, this year for its "The Daily Show: The Daily Show Correspondents On Jon Stewart." The Academy singled out the digital entry in its Special Class - Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Programs area.
The Emmy Awards will be presented in two ceremonies. The first, primarily for creative arts categories, will take place on Saturday, September 12, while the balance of the Emmys, primarily for the performing arts, will be announced before a black-tie audience during a primetime telecast (ABC) on Sunday, September 20. Both ceremonies will take place at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles, CA.
