Comcast Awards $39,000 in Scholarships to Connecticut Students

National President of Comcast Foundation and CT Native Joseph W. Waz, Jr. Attends Ceremony at Capitol Building Recognizing Graduating High School Seniors

BERLIN, Conn., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- At a special ceremony held today at the Connecticut State Capitol in Hartford, Comcast honored 39 graduating high school seniors from across Connecticut who have won a helping hand for college in the form of $1,000 scholarships from the Comcast Foundation. The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program, one of the Comcast Foundation's signature community investment programs, annually recognizes students who have demonstrated leadership skills, academic achievement and a commitment to community service.

Joseph W. Waz, Jr., a Connecticut native and President of the Comcast Foundation, participated in the ceremony to help distribute scholarships to the students.

"Each year, we are excited to provide Leaders and Achievers scholarships to talented students who demonstrate leadership in school activities and reflect a strong commitment to community service," said Doug Guthrie, Senior Vice President for Comcast's Western New England Region. "Given the economic uncertainty facing families across Connecticut and our nation, this year's awards take on even greater significance and we are proud to participate in a small way in helping these future leaders power their dreams for success."

A commitment to community service is an essential component in the selection of Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship recipients. This year's honorees are catalysts for positive change in their communities and schools, participating in a wide variety of community service activities, such as helping to revitalize communities, mentoring and coaching younger students, volunteering at hospitals and participating in and local blood, food and clothing drives and fundraising walks. Community organizations throughout Connecticut, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross and Special Olympics, have benefited from the service and leadership of this year's recipients.

Nationally, 1,879 high school seniors received $1,000 Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarships this year, including 169 from New England. In the nine years since the program began, Comcast has awarded $11 million in college aid to 11,000 scholarship winners. In that time, the Comcast Foundation has awarded 241 Connecticut high school seniors $1,000 Comcast Leaders and Achievers scholarships, totaling $241,000.

Each year, Comcast works with high school principals, guidance counselors and school administrators to select the scholarship recipients. The program is overseen by International Scholarship and Tuition Services, Inc., an independent firm that specializes in managing sponsored scholarship programs.

A list of the scholarship recipients in Connecticut is below.
