FRIDAY, MAY 29: BENNY GOODMAN'S 100TH

Profile America -- Friday, May 29th. Clarinetist Benny Goodman -- who came to epitomize the swing era -- was born 100 years ago tomorrow in Chicago. Showing great musical skill at an early age, he made his first recordings while still wearing short pants. Success followed success, and by the 1930s, his band was appearing in movies and on national radio. Perhaps his most notable performance was in 1938 -- the first jazz concert ever held in Carnegie Hall, including the immortal "Sing, Sing, Sing." Benny Goodman came to be known as the "King of Swing," and his music was heard by GIs in every theater of World War II. Swing dominated music charts for 20 years. Today, rock accounts for close to a third of all music sales. Profile America is a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau, now preparing for the 2010 Census.
