WASHINGTON, May 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) announced today it will present the first annual Leaders Award to Dan Glickman, Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) and Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (R-CA). The award will be presented at this evening's Opening Night Party of the Politics on Film festival, which will be hosted by Mrs. Mary Margaret Valenti. The festival takes place this weekend, May 7 to 10, 2009, in Washington, D.C. at the following locations: E Street Cinema, George Washington University's Marvin Amphitheatre and Navy Memorial Auditorium.
The Bipartisan Policy Center Leaders Award recognizes persons who have displayed an outstanding commitment to strengthening the concentric circles of entertainment and politics. The award honors members of the policy and film communities who embody the spirit of the unique relationship between film, politics, and government, and acknowledge the importance of civility in our nation's political discourse.
"I am grateful for this recognition by the Bipartisan Policy Center and for the opportunity to celebrate the unique intersection between Washington and Hollywood at this weekend's Politics on Film festival," said Glickman. "One of the great powers of film will be on full display this weekend as people on the right, left and everywhere in between will sit side-by-side in theaters all over town to watch these thought-provoking movies. The dialogue between policy experts and filmmakers will help enrich political discourse across party lines."
Glickman became Chairman and CEO of the MPAA in September 2004. Previously he was the Director of the Institute of Politics located at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Prior to that he served as Agriculture Secretary from 1995 to 2001. From 1977 to 1995, he served as a Congressman from Kansas.
Congresswoman Bono Mack was elected to California's 45th District in 1998 through a special election to fill the seat of her late husband, the Honorable Sonny Bono. During her time in Congress, she has led efforts to improve health care, protect the environment, strengthen the economy and protect consumers.
"The film industry has a long history of enlightening and informing people about political events and figures," said Bono Mack. "As a Californian, I recognize the important role films play in our state and national economy and am pleased to work on a bipartisan basis to support the rights and ideas of content creators. I applaud the Politics on Film festival for highlighting the work of filmmakers who examine crucial public policy issues."
