MEDIA ADVISORY: Columbine 10th Anniversary Events March 20
DENVER, March 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Reporters covering the 10th anniversary of the Columbine tragedy will have all-day access on Friday, March 20, 2009, to those speaking out on the most critical issues that threaten school safety today.
Members of the Columbine community, including parents, educators, first responders, and former students, will join stakeholders from across Colorado to discuss urgent radical change needed to protect schools.
The day-long event, called "Colorado Rising," organized by School Safety Partners, will begin with a 9:00 a.m. press conference at the Denver Press Club, 1330 Glenarm Place, Denver, CO 80204. This will be followed by a Colorado stakeholders' working lunch and open forum from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Johnson & Wales University, College of Business, Upper Library, 1900 Olive Street, Denver, CO 80220.
Participants will include Andrew Robinson, former Columbine student and director of the new film, "April Showers," based on the Columbine tragedy; Darrell Scott, father of Rachel Scott, the Columbine victim who has inspired a nationwide youth movement; Ted Zocco-Hochhalter and John-Michael Keyes, school safety parent activists; Kristi Mohrbacher, former Columbine student; Jeff Kass, author of the new book, "Columbine: A True Crime Story;" Frank DeAngelis, Columbine High School principal; Jim Walpole, Platte Canyon School District superintendent; Colorado lawmakers Tom Wiens and Steve King; Vincent Wincelowicz, Foundation for the Prevention of School Violence; Chuck Burdick, Columbine shooting first responder; Patrick Hobby, policy advisor on interoperable communications; Sarah Strizzi, U.S. Department of Education; Kathy Morris, 2008 REMS Grant awardee for Durango Public Schools; and school and public safety decision-makers from more than 20 Colorado counties and school districts.
At 4:00 p.m., there will be an advance screening of "April Showers," an intense feature film that shows how several teens survive the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history. The screening will be held in Jared S. Polis Auditorium at Johnson & Wales University, followed by a discussion with writer-director Andrew Robinson and producer Jenna Edwards.
"Colorado Rising" will be moderated by international school safety expert, Michael Dorn.
