WASHINGTON, March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Fundacion Azteca America is pleased to announce the launch of its ongoing 2009 issues forum series with "The State of Latinos: Census 2010" on March 25 at the recently inaugurated Capitol Hill Visitors Center.
The aim of the forum is to emphasize the importance of the 2010 Census for the Latino community and the U.S. democratic process as a whole. Moderated by Congressmember Charlie Gonzalez (D-TX), Congressmember Pedro Pierluisi (D-PR) and Dr. Victoria DeFrancesco, Northwestern University, the forum includes representatives from Voto Latino, Mexican American Legal and Educational Fund (MALDEF), League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI), NDN, and National Institute for Latino Policy.
Opening remarks will be presented by Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) and Congressmember Joe Baca (D-CA), with Dr. Deborah Ortega, from the University of Denver, giving an update on the State of Latinos and U.S. Census Bureau Associate Director Arnold Jackson presenting the Census plan.
The forum is part of a multipronged, multimedia effort by Fundacion Azteca America to encourage Latino participation in the Census process. The 2010 Census is a crucial step for the Latino community to ensure that it is proportionally represented in federal, state and local budgets, as well as in representative districts of the political process. Unfortunately, authority fears by the Latino community can lead to limited participation in the census process.
"Our television and print informational campaign is 'Porque tu vales, dejate contar! Because you're worth it, let yourself be counted!' and this is exactly what we want from our community; to have no fear and to be represented in the April 2010 census," said Luis J. Echarte, Chairman of Azteca America Network and Fundacion Azteca America.
