Open auditions, announced on our website, are held twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. Public and private school and instrumental instructors are notified and encouraged to send their students who wish to join. For the many schools whose music programs have been cut back, this is a rare opportunity to participate in a rich musical experience.
Partner in the LA Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Partners Program, and sponsored by Stephen S. Wise Temple, Los Angeles Youth Orchestra represents over 50 public and private Los Angeles Area Schools and reflects the diverse quality of the entire city with students from ages 8 to 18 encompassing a spectrum of cultures, religions, and abilities. Some of our inspirational examples come from students with disabilities, such as one of our flute players who, despite being blind from birth, has discovered the remarkable ability to play in an orchestra.
Our students have performed at major venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, UCLA Schoenberg Hall, and Zipper Concert Hall at the Colburn School. They rehearse and play alongside professional musicians and in concerts have played with celebrities such as pianist Joe Fan, concert artist with Yo Yo Ma and Silk Road Ensemble, Israeli composer, Tzi Avni with narration by actress Gates Mcfadden of Star Trek fame, Lowell Milken of the Milken Foundation, concert pianist, author and radio personality, Mona Golabek, and Congressman Henry Waxman.
Artistic Director/Composer Russell Steinberg is also Director of the Stephen Wise Music Academy, a UCLA Faculty Lecturer, and a popular speaker for the Disney Hall Upbeat Live talks. His recently released book AudioMaps(TM) to the Beethoven Symphonies, vol. 1, is the centerpiece for a new series of lectures on the Beethoven symphonies beginning February 17, 2009.
