Jazz Workshop Inc., to Receive 2008 BNY Mellon Jazz Community Award
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- BNY Mellon Jazz will recognize the achievements of one of Pittsburgh's most distinguished jazz organizations by presenting the 2008 BNY Mellon Jazz Community Award to Jazz Workshop, Inc.
Jazz Workshop, Inc., founded in 1973 by Harold Young, strives to "keep jazz alive" in the Pittsburgh region by allowing a diverse group of individuals to learn jazz from a variety of accomplished, professional jazz musicians. Young will accept the award during the organization's monthly jazz family night on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in Homewood, 7101 Hamilton Avenue, Pittsburgh.
Taking the form of an original glass sculpture by noted Pennsylvania glass artist Kathleen Mulcahy, the award will be accompanied by a $5,000 contribution from BNY Mellon Jazz to Jazz Workshop, Inc.
"We are proud to support Jazz Workshop, Inc. in its mission to promote jazz performance and appreciation of the strong tradition of jazz in Pittsburgh communities," said James P. McDonald, BNY Mellon Director of Philanthropy and Employee Programs. "For more than 35 years, the organization has been providing music education and motivation for people of all ages by offering instruction from and access to some of the most talented jazz musicians in our region. This presentation recognizes Jazz Workshop, Inc.'s outstanding contributions to the musical community and their commitment to providing a place where the entire family can enjoy free and exceptional entertainment."
"We are honored to be recognized by BNY Mellon Jazz for our work with children, aspiring musicians and those in our communities who love jazz," Young said. "Hundreds of students attend our programs each year and it is tremendously rewarding to see their progress, both as musicians and as individuals."
Jazz Workshop, Inc. hosts multiple concerts throughout the year at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Homewood branch, providing an opportunity for students and jazz masters to come together and play Big Band charts and original compositions. The February 25 concert is part of this yearlong tradition.
