College Intramural Flag Football Teams to Compete for National Championships
NEW YORK, Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- While America's top Division 1 college football teams square off in two dozen bowl games, nearly 100 of the country's best college intramural flag football teams and over 1,500 students will travel to New Orleans from December 29-31 to compete in the 2008 Slingbox ACIS Football National Championships -- the culmination of the largest collegiate football program in the nation.
The event is hosted by the University of New Orleans, which hosted the competition from 1979-2005. In 2005-06, the University of West Florida hosted the Nationals, due to Hurricane Katrina, while UNO focused on rebuilding and restoring its historic school and community. The event returned to UNO last year, and the 30th anniversary celebration is now set for later this month.
Teams will compete on Dec. 29 and 30, at Lafreniere Park in Metairie, LA, with the national title games in each division on December 31 at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans City Park. These championships are the culmination of a program that began with 200 schools hosting on-campus Slingbox ACIS Football leagues throughout the fall semester for 250,000 participants playing in over 100,000 games.
Following the regular season, teams competed in regional tournaments at University of West Florida, University of Nebraska, Western Kentucky University and UNC-Wilmington. The top two teams in each of the three divisions (Men's, Women's and Co-Rec) earned expense-paid trips to New Orleans. The National Championships are an open event, so any team from across the country can attend, even if they did not compete in the regional tourneys or do not attend a 4-year college/university. There are three divisions to accommodate all teams: Collegiate (4-year colleges/universities), Jr. College (2-year) and Open/Military (Non-collegiate).
Fox College Sports will air a 30-minute television highlight show featuring action from the tournament, personal video road trip diaries with some of the players and highlights of the groups' experiences in New Orleans.
