KNBA's Annual Gavel-to-Gavel Coverage broadcast on national level for first time

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Koahnic Broadcast Corporation is pleased to announce its first national broadcast of KNBA 90.3 fm's live Gavel-to-Gavel Coverage of the 2008 Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) Convention Thursday, October 23rd through Saturday, October 25th.

As the nation faces a historic financial crisis and a hotly-contested presidential race with predicted record-breaking voter turnout, KNBA offers an important Alaska Native perspective through its AFN Gavel-to-Gavel coverage. Jaclyn Sallee, Koahnic President & CEO, says, "As the national spotlight is on Alaska's energy resources, global warming in the Arctic and other Alaskan issues, we decided to deliver the AFN broadcast nationally to public radio stations throughout the nation." AFN is the largest gathering of Alaska Natives and American Indians in Alaska, and one of the largest American Indian/Alaska Native conventions in the country.

Join KNBA's broadcasts of live coverage from the convention floor where top leaders will address the delegation on the fuel cost crisis, renewable and alternative energy resources, energy efficiency and weatherization. There will also be a special tribute to the Alaska Native military and a forum on improving veteran health care delivery.

KNBA is also providing complete coverage through webstreaming on two websites: http://www.knba.org/ and http://www.nv1.org/. Koahnic's Native broadcast distribution service, Native Voice One (NV1), will distribute the broadcast as a free service to all public radio stations nationwide.

This broadcast marks the twelfth year of KNBA providing this unique service to Southcentral Alaska and participating public radio stations throughout Alaska. This will also be the first broadcast from the new Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center in downtown Anchorage, Alaska.

KNBA will broadcast daily translations at 12 noon in three Alaska Native languages: Athabascan, Inupiaq and Yup'ik. The broadcast team will work with translators Adeline Kari (Gwich'in Athabascan), Barbara Armstrong (Inupiaq), and KBC Resource Development Specialist, Vernon Chimegalrea (Yup'ik). The 2008 AFN Broadcast will also feature daily half hour panel discussions. These discussions are an opportunity for attendees who are not convention delegates to give their voice to the important topics being discussed at AFN. Panel discussions are at 12:30 PM daily.

The broadcast will be hosted Dixie Hutchinson and Lori Townsend who are both familiar voices to Alaska public radio listeners.
