The Writer's Block Ink Presents the Original Student Production 'Same Body, Different Wounds'
August 15, 16 and 17, at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's Dina Merrill Theater, Waterford, CT
NEW LONDON, Conn., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- In the new, original production "Same Body, Different Wounds," students explore the consequences and impact on their school, friends and families of bullying, secrets, honesty and HIV. "Same Body, Different Wounds" was written, choreographed and staged by students participating in The Writer's Block Ink's fifth Summer Program, an eight-week immersion in writing, acting, voice and dance, giving students the skills to conceive, write and perform a play that explores topics affecting their lives and communities. Performances begin at 7:30 pm, on Friday, August 15, and Saturday, August 16, and at 3:00 pm, on Sunday, August 17. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students and $5 per person for groups of ten or more. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling THE BLOCK at 860-442-5625, or at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford the day of each performance. Proceeds will fund classes and future productions.
Summer Program Director, Chantaal Goodwater, has been a part of The Writer's Block Ink since its first production at The Garde Arts Center in New London, CT. "Performing with The Block was a wonderful experience for me growing up," says Goodwater. "It also has helped me in directing the Summer Program because I understand where a lot of the students are coming from when they're asked to perform on a stage for the first time."
"The O'Neill is thrilled to welcome the students and staff of The Writer's Block Ink to our campus," says O'Neill General Manager Jill A. Mauritz. "The work of The Writer's Block is in perfect harmony with the O'Neill's commitment to developing new work and nurturing emerging voices for the stage and we look forward to having these talented young artists in residence."
The Writer's Block Ink has been serving young people in Southeastern Connecticut since 2003, encouraging and assisting students from ages 8 -- 21 to create original plays with a strong emphasis on writing and performance. Courses are structured to guide students to improve writing skills, to develop new skills, including leadership and teamwork, and to build self confidence. More than 700 young people have participated in Writer's Block programs over the past five years, producing ten student-written and staged theatrical productions. Block students also have performed at more than 30 regional events and venues, including The Garde Arts Center and the New Haven Arts Festival, to rave reviews.
The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, founded in 1964 by George C. White, is the pre-eminent laboratory for the development of new works and new voices for the American Theater. It has fostered the careers of some of America's most influential writers and scores of projects directed at the O'Neill have gone on to full productions at other theaters around the world.
