Segment noted MEDIHONEY as a key dressing used in specialty burn clinic in Iraq

PRINCETON, N.J., Aug. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Derma Sciences, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: DSCI) , a provider of advanced wound care products, announced that on the CBS Evening News on Thursday, July 31, its key product MEDIHONEY was featured as part of a story about a specialty burn clinic in Iraq run by US National Guard volunteers. The dressing is used as standard first-line therapy in place of the traditional silvadene antimicrobial cream at the Smith Gate Burn Clinic, the only service in Iraq offering burn care to children.

The Smith Gate Burn Clinic (SGBC) is part of the military's civilian assistance program, and is located in a small shipping container located outside the walls of the operation base. According to North Dakota National Guard soldier Col. Craig Lambrecht, M.D. -- the doctor who initially brought MEDIHONEY to SGBC -- the clinic sees anywhere from 20 to 60 patients per day. Since electricity is not widely available in Iraq, the children there are at high risk of burn injury due to their increased exposure to flammable substances and fire. They are also at risk of burns due to the consequence of war, such as from explosive devices. However, it is noted that the children treated at SGBC are not victims of Coalition fire or related action.

Dr. Lambrecht has stated that after he began using MEDIHONEY dressings, the patients healed more quickly and had fewer infections. Additionally, the Iraqi families preferred MEDIHONEY over silvadene -- considered standard of care -- because it was natural and does not need to be changed as often. According to Dr. Lambrecht, "I would use the MEDIHONEY on burns on my children, as the first choice, without question," he said.
