Comcast Scholarship Program Awards More Than $1.9 Million to High School Seniors
1,965 students receive Comcast Leaders and Achievers(R) Scholarships in recognition of their academic achievement and community service
PHILADELPHIA, April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Nearly 2,000 high school seniors across the country are receiving a helping hand for college in the form of $1,000 scholarships from the Comcast Foundation. The Comcast Leaders and Achievers(R) Scholarship Program, one of the Comcast Foundation's signature community investment programs, recognizes students who have demonstrated leadership skills, academic achievement and a commitment to community service.
"The cost of college continues to rise, so the Comcast Foundation is proud to present these young people with the Comcast Leaders and Achievers(R) Scholarship in recognition of their hard work, leadership and commitment to their communities," said David L. Cohen, Comcast Executive Vice President and co-chairman of The Comcast Foundation. "These students represent our future leaders and they embody Comcast's belief in giving back to the communities where we live and work."
A commitment to community service is an essential component in the selection of winners of Comcast Leaders and Achievers(R) Scholarships. This year's winners have participated in a wide variety of community service activities, such as helping to revitalize communities as part of mission work, mentoring and coaching younger students, volunteering at hospitals and participating in local blood, food and clothing drives. National organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the American Cancer Society, in addition to thousands of local community organizations, have benefited from their service and leadership.
"Comcast is proud to have awarded almost $10 million in Leaders and Achievers(R) Scholarships since the program began eight years ago," said Joseph W. Waz, Jr., Senior Vice President of External Affairs for Comcast Corporation and President of The Comcast Foundation. "Youth leadership development is one of the Comcast Foundation's community investment areas of focus because we believe we can make a significant and measurable impact, and these students are very deserving of this recognition."
This year's scholarship winners will be attending universities and colleges throughout the country, such as Princeton University, Stanford University, Howard University, Johns Hopkins University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Each year, Comcast works with high school principals, guidance counselors and school administrators to select the scholarship recipients. The program is managed by Scholarship Program Administrators -- an independent, not-for- profit organization that manages corporate and corporate foundation scholarship programs.
