Cox Enterprises Partners with Earth Hour to Flip the Switch
Cox's media properties encourage participation across the country
ATLANTA, March 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Earth Hour is sweeping the globe. Companies and individuals are joining together to switch off their lights at 8 p.m. local time on March 29 for one hour - making a bold statement against climate change. Cox Enterprises, along with many of its local properties, is joining forces with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) as a media partner to inspire participation in Earth Hour.

Cox Enterprises is participating in about 30 cities and has provided more than $200,000 of in-kind media support in the form of Public Service Announcements (PSAs), print and online promotions, and guest appearances on local television programming. Each participating location is also encouraging its employees to join the action at home.
"Our employees have responded enthusiastically to Earth Hour," said Jim Kennedy, chairman and CEO of Cox Enterprises. "Across the company, our employees are turning off the lights at work and home. It's the little steps we take to conserve energy that together can add up to a big difference."
Earth Hour: U.S. Flagship Cities
Cox is proud to participate in each of Earth Hour's U.S. flagship cities - Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco. In addition to their own involvement, many of Cox's properties in these locations are endorsing the effort through in-kind media support.
Atlanta:
The buildings that house Cox Enterprises' corporate headquarters will go dark, so will The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, WSB-TV and Cox Radio Group Atlanta (WSB-750 AM, KISS 104.1 FM, B98.5 FM, 95.5 The Beat and 97.1 The River). Manheim Georgia and Manheim Atlanta, along with Cox Auto Trader's AutoTrader.com and Auto Mart offices, will also participate.
To encourage involvement, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, WSB-TV and each of Cox's Atlanta radio stations provided in-kind media support. WSB-TV also hosted WWF on its People2People community affairs program. Cox Enterprises is highlighting the event on its corporate Web sites, www.coxinc.com and CoxConserves.com.
Chicago:
Manheim Arena Illinois, Manheim Chicago and Manheim Metro Chicago will each turn off non-essential lights at their auction facilities.
Phoenix:
Cox Communications Arizona enlisted the help of Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon to urge action through customized Earth Hour PSAs. Along with spreading the word, Cox's massive cable system will turn out lights in 17 metro Phoenix and Tucson buildings.
San Francisco:
KTVU, Cox's top-rated FOX television affiliate, will turn out non- essential lights and will encourage the city to do the same. The station has been airing PSAs and included Earth Hour guests in its local programming. Cox's KICU-TV, known as TV36, and Manheim San Francisco Bay will also turn off their lights.
Earth Hour: Other U.S. Cities
Cox's commitment extends beyond Earth Hour's four U.S. flagship cities. Across the company, local Cox properties have adopted Earth Hour's call to action.
Charlotte (North Carolina):
Cox's WSOC television station will turn off non-essential building lights.
Clearwater (Florida):
Cox Auto Trader's AutoTrader Publishing office in Clearwater will go dark.
Dallas:
Cox Television's TeleRep office signed on to make the switch.
Dayton (Ohio):
Cox's Dayton Daily News will turn off non-essential lights.
Fairfield (Ohio):
The Fairfield Echo, part of Cox Ohio Publishing, will turn off non- essential lights.
Greensboro (North Carolina):
Cox Auto Trader's Mid-Atlantic Composing facility will go dark with non- essential lights.
Greenville (South Carolina):
Cox Radio Greenville (107.3 JAMZ and Hot 98.1 FM) has signed on to turn off non-essential lights.
Hamilton (Ohio):
Cox Ohio Publishing's JournalNews will turn off non-essential lights.
Honolulu:
Cox Radio Hawaii (KCCN FM100, Hawaiian 105 KINE, Krater 96, Power 104.3, AM940 Hawaii and 650AM Hawaii) will turn out station lights, as well as air PSAs to spread the word across the islands.
Houston:
Manheim Houston will turn off non-essential lights around its auction facilities. Manheim Texas Hobby will also be turning off its lights, as well as including Earth Hour information with each employee's paycheck.
Cox Auto Trader's AutoTrader Publishing office will also turn off its lights in Houston.
Jacksonville (Florida):
The Cox Radio Jacksonville group (96.9 The Eagle, Rock 105, WOKV News/Talk Radio, 95.1 WAPE and 102.9 The Point) will participate.
Lakeland (Florida):
Manheim Lakeland will turn off non-essential lights around its auction facilities.
Lebanon (Ohio):
The Western Star, part of Cox Ohio Publishing, will join the action by turning out the lights.
Mason (Ohio):
Cox Ohio Publishing's The Pulse-Journal will turn off non-essential lights.
Middletown (Ohio):
The Middletown Journal, part of Cox Ohio Publishing, will switch off its lights.
Milford (Connecticut):
In Milford, Cox Radio stations (Star 99.9FM, 99.1 PLR and 94.3 WYBC) will turn out non-essential building lights to support the movement.
Minneapolis:
Manheim Minneapolis will turn off non-essential lights around its auction facilities.
Nashville (Tennessee):
Manheim Nashville will participate in the event by turning off lights.
Orlando:
Cox's WFTV and WRDQ television stations will turn off non-essential lights, as well as air PSAs. The WFTV.com Web site also features the event to encourage participation.
Oxford (Ohio):
The Oxford Press, part of Cox Ohio Publishing, will turn off non-essential lights.
New York:
Cox's Manhattan-based advertising sales properties (HRP, TeleRep and Cox Cross Media) have signed up as Earth Hour participants.
106.1 BLI and 102.3 WBAB, Cox's Long Island radio stations, will also turn off non-essential building lights.
Richmond (Virginia):
Cox's WKHK radio station will turn out the lights and will go further by unplugging appliances and turning off electronics all weekend.
San Antonio:
In San Antonio, Cox Radio stations (KONO 101.1FM, 99.5 KISS FM, Magic 105.3FM, Y 100FM, Power 106.7 and KKYX) will turn out non-essential building lights, as well as air PSAs to support the movement.
Cox Auto Trader's AutoTrader Publishing office will also turn off its lights in San Antonio.
Springfield (Ohio):
Cox Ohio Publishing's Springfield News-Sun will turn off non-essential building lights.
Tampa:
Cox Radio Tampa (Magic 94.9 FM, WDUV 105.5FM, 107.3 The Eagle, 97X, 101.5 The Point and 102.5FM The Bone) will turn off non-essential building lights in support of Earth Hour.
