Held on Friday, February 1 at Phoenix Symphony Hall, the 9th Annual Super Bowl Gospel Celebration featured dynamic performances by superstars Patti Labelle, Donnie McClurkin, Martha Munizzi, CeCe Winans and Marvin Winans. Among the evening's many crowd-stirring moments was the staging of a performance by the first-ever NFL Players All-Star Choir, which featured over 30 of the league's stars such as longtime event supporters Michael Gaines (Bills); Ovie Mughelli (Falcons); Richard Seymour (Patriots); Roland Williams (Rams/Retired); Troy Vincent (Redskins/Retired); and Pro Bowlers Tommie Harris (Bears) and Ray Lewis (Ravens). Grammy award-winning Gospel star McClurkin directed the choir as they sang a rendition of his hit single, "I'm Walking." Scott Allen, of Brooklyn, New York, winner of the My Song, My Way online vocal contest powered by Burger King(R), also joined the choir for the performance. Later that evening, Allen received a standing ovation from the capacity crowd in response to his a capella performance of "The Star Spangled Banner," which Allen also sang to win the online competition. In addition to winning the opportunity to sing live with the NFL Players All-Star Choir, the My Song, My Way contest prize package included two (2) tickets to Super Bowl XLII, first class hotel accommodations, roundtrip airfare with ground transportation and VIP access to some of the hottest events surrounding Super Bowl.
"The NFL has been an active and supportive event partner," said Few. "Together, we have worked diligently to deliver a successful ninth production, which culminated into a memorable experience for the players, fans, corporate partners and all of those involved."
The NFL sanction is a highly coveted designation that grants official usage of the NFL brand and logo. As the only sanctioned event that can officially carry the name Super Bowl in its title, the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration provides celebrity entertainment and serves as the premiere family event during Super Bowl Weekend. Since its inception, the event has drawn crowds in the thousands and time and again has demonstrated growth year-to- year, selling out venues in major markets hosting the Super Bowl, including Miami (James L. Knight Center), Detroit (The Masonic Temple), Jacksonville (Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church), Houston (Reliant Arena), and now Phoenix Symphony Hall.
The 2008 Super Bowl Gospel Celebration is powered by Burger King(R) Additional sponsors and media partners include The NFL Players Association/NFL PLAYERS and Ebony Magazine. SBGC has garnered support through sponsorships from key corporations including Motorola, Sam's Club, a division of $365 billion dollar retailer Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Burger King, Gateway Computers, Amtrak, American Family Insurance, St. Joseph Aspirin and McDonalds. Each year, a sponsor offers guests attending SBGC a chance to win a pair of coveted Super Bowl tickets.
