Harris Corporation's Secure Personal Radio Chosen for Norwegian Defense Forces' Personal Field Radio Standardization Program
Tactical Radios Provide Individual Soldiers with Secure Digital Voice and Data Communications
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has received a contract from the Defence Forces of Norway to provide several thousand RF-7800S Secure Personal Radios. The contract was awarded after a competitive evaluation.
The Harris RF-7800S is a lightweight wideband radio that delivers secure tactical communications to individual soldiers. Norway will deploy the radios and accessories as part of a soldier modernization program to provide individual soldiers with digital voice and data communications.
"We were looking for a flexible network-enabled soldier radio, offering reliable communication under difficult operational conditions," said Major Rune Nesland-Steinor, project manager of the Norwegian Personal Field Radio Program. "The radio's functional performance, coupled with its data throughput, were important determining factors."
The Harris RF-7800S offers unique, full-duplex, dual-net voice capability, allowing up to three operators to talk simultaneously with an unlimited number of listeners. The radio's advanced waveform, coupled with the 350 to 450 MHz frequency band, ensures more than 2 kilometers range over open terrain and a superior ability to penetrate buildings and other structures. The radio incorporates a built-in Standard Positioning Service (SPS) GPS receiver, allowing for real-time position tracking and messaging services. All transmissions are secured by standard Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) or customer-unique Citadel(R) II digital encryption. With the standard rechargeable battery, the radio weighs less than 600 grams.
"The Harris RF-7800S will strengthen the link between Norway's deployed forces and its command and control infrastructure. The radio offers front-line soldiers a complete suite of tactical communications capabilities for the first time," said Steve Marschilok, vice president and general manager, International Government Systems, Harris Corporation. "Commanders will be able to react quickly to changing circumstances through real-time information provided by networked warfighters. We're pleased to be providing this radio to Norway, which is a technology leader in the NATO community and at the forefront of adopting network-enabled technologies."
The Harris RF-7800S Secure Personal Radio is part of an expanding line of digital wideband tactical radios designed to broaden access to battlefield networking through secure two-way transmission of voice and IP data. The line includes the Harris RF-7800M Manpack Radio, a multiband, high-capacity data radio offering on-air rates up to 10 Mbps, as well as the Harris RF-7800W Broadband Ethernet Radio, a high-capacity line-of-sight radio. The RF-7800W provides high-bandwidth data transmission between command posts and forward operating bases at rates in excess of 80 megabits per second in the 4.4 to 5.0 GHz band.
