Stars Volunteer at Food Banks in N.Y., L.A. and D.C. and Netflix Pledges Portion of Gift Subscription Proceeds to Fund Hunger Relief
LOS GATOS, Calif. and CHICAGO, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX), the world's largest online movie rental service, and America's Second Harvest -- The Nation's Food Bank Networks, the nation's largest hunger-relief organization, today announced an outreach campaign intended to assist families in need this holiday season and raise awareness of the issue of hunger in America. Food banks across America are facing a potential crisis as the holidays approach and millions of Americans are seeking help feeding their families.
Energizing the campaign by volunteering this month at food banks in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. are Hollywood stars Teri Hatcher, Kevin Bacon, Adrian Grenier and Morgan Freeman. In support of the effort, Netflix will donate a portion of the proceeds generated by its holiday gift subscription program to America's Second Harvest. Netflix gift subscriptions can be purchased at http://www.netflix.com/gift and Netflix gift cards can be purchased at select retailers, including Office Depot, Winn-Dixie and Barnes & Noble College Booksellers.
"Netflix is known for making the enjoyment of movies easy, but we recognize that life is anything but easy for many American families, especially during the holidays," said Leslie Kilgore, chief marketing officer for Netflix. "With that in mind, we are honored to support the efforts of America's Second Harvest to provide comfort and sustenance to families in need this holiday season and throughout the year."
Each celebrity has volunteered to work at an America's Second Harvest member food bank to bring attention to the reality of hunger and poverty in America. Teri Hatcher ("Desperate Housewives") will stuff and distribute backpacks for kids at the Los Angeles Food Bank on December 4; Kevin Bacon ("Mystic River") will pack and sort boxes at the Food Bank for New York City on December 5; Adrian Grenier ("Entourage") will serve food at the Neighbors Together Soup Kitchen in Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Morgan Freeman ("Million Dollar Baby") will volunteer at a senior citizen food program at the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, D.C. on December 18.
"One in 10 people faces hunger in this country and the involvement of these prominent Americans to help build awareness and encourage volunteerism sets a great example for how everyone can be a part of the solution to a hunger-free America," said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of America's Second Harvest. "We are so grateful to Netflix for creating this unique program that will give Americans the opportunity to contribute towards solving the hunger problem while giving the gift of Netflix to loved ones this holiday season."
On an increasingly greater scale, America's Second Harvest is serving working parents struggling to make ends meet, children who need food on weekends when school lunch programs are closed, and the elderly who must often choose between groceries and medical care. Through this holiday program, both Netflix and America's Second Harvest aim to educate the public about the 35 million people, including nearly 12 million children, who are uncertain where their next meal will come from.
