National 'Interfaith Heroes Month' Begins on January 1

DETROIT, Dec. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- On Jan. 1, Detroit-area religious leaders will launch a new national celebration called "Interfaith Heroes Month." Designed to highlight and expand upon the national Martin Luther King holiday that falls in mid-January, this new Detroit partnership will showcase for a national audience 31 inspiring stories of men and women from various nationalities, including King, who were heroes in overcoming one of the most urgent issues of our era - religiously-fueled conflict.

The Interfaith Partners of the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, together with ReadtheSpirit.com and WWJ NewsRadio are co-sponsors of the project.

The full stories about these heroes, plus comments from men and women who have been inspired by their examples, will go live on January 1 at the www.InterfaithHeroes.info Web site, according to David Crumm, founding editor of ReadtheSpirit.com .

Interfaith Partners is marking this historic "first" in interfaith relations by publishing a companion book, "Interfaith Heroes," by Dan Buttry, a resident of southeast Michigan and international peace negotiator for American Baptist Churches. The 31-chapter paperback book will be available for purchase through the InterfaithHeroes Web site after Jan. 1 - or it can be ordered directly through Amazon and Barnes and Noble online stores before Jan. 1, starting in late December.

"Each religious tradition honors a rich list of leaders who shaped its beliefs and practices," explains Rev. Buttry, who also serves as a member of the Interfaith Partners Board. "Many lived exemplary lives and are role models to this day. But, some of these religious leaders inspire us because they were peacemakers who dared to cross beyond their traditional boundaries to link with people from other faiths."

The Interfaith Partners, established in Metropolitan Detroit after 9/11, is part of the 60-year tradition of the Michigan Roundtable, says Steve Spreitzer, director of Interfaith Programs. "The Interfaith Partners have focused on making a difference through community service, advocacy, and education. This project was the initiative of Rev. Buttry and Bob Brutell, also an Interfaith Partners Board member, who conducted the research, writing and editing of the book."
