Six Bay Area Radio Stations Participate in ABC7's Futures Market to Forecast the Future
Radio listeners introduced to prediction markets hosted by Inkling Markets
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Bay area radio stations KFOG 104.5 FM, Star 101.3 FM, KMEL 106.1 FM, KKSF 103.7 FM, KISQ 98.1 FM and KGRN 960 AM are offering listeners a new participant news tool on their websites that connects them to ABC7's futures market platform (http://abc7.inklingmarkets.com/). Powered by Inkling Markets, this platform provides each station's listeners the opportunity to predict outcomes of developing news and entertainment stories through a "Wisdom of the Crowd" forecasting method commonly known as a prediction market.
"ABC7 News San Francisco was thrilled to launch our ABC7 Futures Market last February on the Inkling Markets' prediction platform," explained Ellen Conlan, vice president of station marketing and research for ABC-KGO. "News viewers are smart. They often understand the future consequence of current events. Prediction markets are simply a tool to harness that insight and share it with others... and achieve a 'gloat factor' when the participants are proven right."
ABC7 is currently encouraging people in the Bay Area to participate in markets regarding union strikes, top grossing concert tours and international politics, as well as local issues such as, "Will Gavin Newsom run for Governor of California in 2010?" ABC7 is the first local broadcast station in the country to use prediction markets to measure public opinion and recently invited Bay Area radio stations to participate by developing unique markets designed for their listeners.
Designed to mimic the stock market, prediction markets work by soliciting input from users and traders. Traders are given fantasy money, with which they buy and sell simulated shares, and prices rise and fall based on the popularity of opinions. Prices represent the probability an outcome will actually occur.
"By combining the opinions of a diverse group of people through Inkling's user-friendly prediction market platform, the participating radio stations and ABC7 are able to create a whole new level of interactivity with viewers and listeners," said Adam Siegel, co-founder and CEO of Inkling Markets, Inc. "The data will provide these stations with more accurate feedback regarding future events and a new way to engage with their audiences."
