Younger Adults Increasingly Treated for Heart Disease-related Conditions

Heart disease, high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries -- conditions that are usually associated with the senior population -- are creeping into young adulthood. According to new research conducted by Medco Health Solutions, Inc., prescription drug use by younger adults for heart disease- related conditions is increasing at a rapid rate. It is far outpacing older adults and offering a glimpse into the forthcoming clinical and financial challenges facing the nation's health care system. The analysis shows that between 2001 and 2006, the number of 20-44 year olds taking prescription medications to treat high cholesterol increased 68 percent, and use of antihypertensives jumped 21 percent.

Nearly Half of American Voters Worry Their Retirement Plans Are Inadequate

Forty-five percent of American voters are not confident they will have the money to cover even their fixed monthly costs during retirement and one in six voters, or approximately 20 million voters, have no retirement plan at all according to a new national survey released by Americans for Secure Retirement. The survey also finds broad support for tax incentives for lifetime annuities, which help strengthen financial security in retirement. The bipartisan poll of likely voters was conducted by Democratic pollster Mark Mellman of the Mellman Group and Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies.

Further Weakening in Home Prices According to the S&P/Case-Shiller(R) Home Price Indices

Data through August 2007, released by Standard & Poor's for its S&P/Case- Shiller Home Price Indices, the leading measure of U-S home prices, show further declines in the prices of existing single family homes across the United States. This marks the 8th consecutive month of negative annual returns and the 21st consecutive month of decelerating returns. The 10-City Composite's annual decline of 5 point 0 percent is at a rate not seen since June 1991. The lowest on record was an annual decline of 6 point 3 percent recorded in April 1991. In August, the 20-City Composite recorded an annual decline of 4 point 4 percent.
