SONOS Chamber Orchestra Presents 'Simply SONOS'
Performance Includes New York Premiere of Arvo Part's Mein Weg and US Premiere of Einar Englund's Symphony No. 4 for strings and percussion
NEW YORK, Sept. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- SONOS Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Erik E. Ochsner will perform a concert entitled "Simply SONOS" on Sunday, October 14, 2007 at the Good Shepherd Church (208th Street and Broadway) at 3PM; and on Monday October 15, 2007 at the New World Stages (340 West 50th Street) at 8pm.
The program includes an homage to the 50th anniversary of the legacy of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) with three works: Suite champetre, Rakastava, and Suite caracteristique. In a programming fashion typical of Finnish American conductor Erik Ochsner, these three highly romantic Sibelius pieces are separated by the contrasting, driving, rhythmic pulse of Arvo Part's Mein Weg, and Philip Glass' Company for string orchestra.
Ernst von Dohnanyi's (1877-1960) Serenade Opus 10, was originally written for string trio, performed here in the arrangement for string orchestra by Lucas Drew. This lush expansion of the trio blossoms with a romantic richness quite similar to that of Sibelius.
Einar Englund's Symphony No. 4 for strings and percussion closes the concert. This work is infused with the influence of Dmitri Shostakovich and dedicated "to the memory of a great composer," one of its key motifs is Shostakovich's 'signature motif' consisting of D, E flat, C and B natural (D-Es-C-H). Though this work premiered in 1976, this performance represents the United States Premiere.
Conductor Erik E. Ochsner serves as Music Director and founder of SONOS Chamber Orchestra, and rehearsal conductor for Academy award/Grammy award winning composer Tan Dun, a collaboration which began in 2002. In November, Erik will conduct members of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in two chamber music pieces of Tan Dun. He will also serve as assistant conductor for two concerts, and performances of "Tea."
In 2006, Erik conducted the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra in performances of Howard Shore's "Lord of the Rings Symphony" and traveled on tour with the production to twenty-two cities. In May of 2007, Ochsner conducted the Chinese premiere of Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot lunaire as part of the Beijing Modern Music Festival. Previously Ochsner also served as Assistant Conductor Brooklyn Philharmonic under Grammy-award winning conductor Robert Spano, Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony.
