NEW YORK, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In "The War", the new PBS documentary, director Ken Burns tells the story of World War II from the perspective of a handful of men and women in four American towns.
Now, in conjunction with the September 23rd debut of the documentary, veterans, as well as their friends and families, in towns across America are being invited to share personal remembrances, photos, and video at "Saluting America's Veterans," a special Website launched today by AmericanProfile.com.
Anchored by a profile of Burns and exclusive video excerpts from the documentary, the interactive, multimedia Website aims to serve as a living museum to veterans who served in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, The Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan.
AmericanProfile.com is published by American Profile, the print weekly that celebrates hometown life and reaches 30 million people via hometown newspapers. Burns will appear on the cover of the September 16 issue. The series airs on September 23-27 on PBS.
Following the lead of Burns' documentary, which brings the global conflict home by telling the story from the perspectives of five U.S. cities, the Website invites veterans from across America, as well as their families and communities, to post personal remembrances, share videos, upload photos, and connect with each other via bulletin boards.
The Website will also allow visitors to:
-- Read dozens of AmericanProfile.com features of American veterans on
both the battlefront and the homefront, including profiles of Earl
Morse, founder of the Honor Flight service that takes veterans free of
charge to the war memorials in Washington, D.C., and Cpl. Matthew A.
Commons, who was killed in Afghanistan.
-- Help send veterans on Honor Flights by making donations directly to
that organization. To show its support, AmericanProfile.com will be
sponsoring a series of Honor Flights through 2008, sending dozens of
veterans on all-expenses-paid trips to the war memorials in
Washington.
-- Shop for memorabilia and music from conflict periods.
-- Download a ready-made graphic that can be posted on a blog or website
to show your support for America's veterans and encourage others to
share their personal stories.
"In the spirit of Ken Burns' documentary, we wanted to create a living museum that gives a face and voice to the extraordinary men and women who have served our country," said Charlie Cox, executive editor of American Profile. "By providing a national stage where people can share their stories and memories, we hope we can play a role in ensuring they receive the recognition and respect they deserve."
Visitors to http://www.americanprofile.com/veterans/ will find a website packed with real-life stories-ordinary people doing extraordinary things to serve America and its veterans-that have never before been promoted to the general public.
"We're losing 1,500 World War II veterans alone every day, so the time to celebrate their contributions is now," said Dick Porter, CEO of American Profile parent Publishing Group of America. "Veterans bring meaning and context to all of our lives. We're creating an umbrella for the great stories of veterans and all the lives they touch."
