MARINA DEL REY, Calif., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Julian Myers, Hollywood publicist whose 90th birthday is February 22nd ("Washington's, too"), will compete in six track and field events October 9th in the 21st Annual Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah. Last year he won three of the competitions and was second in the other three, in his age and sex group. He holds the record for the 3,000 meter race.
Myers and his wife are co-founders of AmigoDay, tm: Just greet anyone anywhere, your way, any month's first Sunday.
"We are striving to make AmigoDay as meaningful worldwide as Mother's Day," Julian explains, "and I believe that within thirty years we will achieve it."
Myers won for his division in the New Las Vegas Marathon in 2005 and 2006, and will race again there December 2. "We will honor The Las Vegas Marathon and Huntsman's Senior Games by dedicating international recognition to them by AmigoDay because they invite all the world's athletes to participate in them. As a living booster of AmigoDay I always compete, too.
"Running is helping us globalize our concept, and so did Voice Of America, with my one-hour interview there translated into 43 languages."
Julian begins conducting, on October 16, for the 35th year, his course in "Entertainment Public Relations" at UCLA Extension in Los Angeles, with 31 p.r. entertainment world leaders appearing during nine consecutive Tuesday evenings, starting October 16. (His similar course at Loyola Marymount Univ. is now in its 15th year). Among the experts at UCLA are the three governors of the Public Relations Branch of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, including the Oscar's President Sid Ganis.
Myers himself has been a member of The Academy's Public Relations Coordinating Committee (Oscars' p.r.) for 25 years.
"My class is limited to 50, and we expect many people will be coming from overseas to take advantage of the opportunity to meet and learn from our thirty-one famed experts," Myers reveals. "So far 1,800 men and women -- but mostly the fair sex -- have taken my classes.
"Maybe they think that $315 provides a wise way to get so well started in Hollywood. My folks had to send me from Detroit to L.A. in 1937 to attend Cinema at USC -- which now costs exactly $46,966 a year, if you can somehow get admitted."
Myers begins a 90-mile run from San Diego County to Los Angeles on his ninetieth birthday, Feb 22, visiting as many newspaper, magazine, radio and television newsrooms as possible, proclaiming AmigoDay, tm. On Sunday, March
2, AmigoDay, tm, he will arrive at the L.A. City Hall, and then his wife and he will entertain 190 friends at a celebratory dinner.
Asked how to live to be one hundred, Myers suggests: "Just find something to achieve that will take you till you're a hundred -- hopefully something of social or civic value -- and, ordinarily, your health will be there for you to attain it. And if you jog slowly for three miles outdoors each morning, as I like to, you'll feel better all along the way."
