Broadcom and OpenTV Collaborate on Next Generation OpenTV(R) Platforms to Provide Advanced Capabilities to Network Operators

Various Broadcom(R) High Definition and Standard Definition Digital Video/Audio SoC Solutions Become VTS Certified on OpenTV Core2(TM) and OpenTV PVR2(TM)

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- IBC2007 -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that it is working closely with OpenTV Corp. (NASDAQ:OPTV) to drive next generation cable, satellite, IP and terrestrial-based set-top box products with advanced features and capabilities that enhance the end-user viewing experience. OpenTV, a leading provider of solutions for the delivery of advanced digital television and cross-platform interactive services, together with Broadcom, will enable best in class set-top box products for a wide selection of high performance, high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) AVC/VC-1 platforms. This includes state-of -the-art video processing and smooth personal video recording (PVR) trick modes to enable a more enhanced user experience.

With software widely adopted by broadcasters, operators and device manufacturers around the world, in over 92 million digital set-top boxes and televisions, OpenTV enables intuitive and meaningful viewing experiences for today's consumers of digital content. OpenTV Core2(TM), the company's flagship product has the ability to route multiple sources of media streams to multiple destinations. This state-of-the-art set-top box middleware, with integrated support for advanced personal video recorders, enables more flexible PVR functionality. The software also enables such features as program guides, video-on-demand, interactive and addressable advertising, IPTV, participation television, games and gaming, and a variety of consumer care and communications applications.

To address current OpenTV Core2 and next generation OpenTV solutions, Broadcom and OpenTV will collaborate to launch platforms for digital content that consumers, broadcasters, operators and device manufacturers can adopt. Broadcom has the advanced technologies and mature drivers required to assist OpenTV with their vision for advanced set-top box, PVR and interactive services. One product in particular, the Broadcom(R) BCM7400 dual-channel AVC/VC-1/MPEG-2 video decoder, features an advanced high performance processor and 3D animation that makes Broadcom an ideal partner for OpenTV.

"With its advanced, integrated set-top box silicon solutions with 3D capabilities, Broadcom's partnership will help OpenTV's customers deploy services with innovative, advanced user interfaces," said Tracy Geist, Senior Vice President of Market Development for OpenTV. "Our ongoing relationship with Broadcom demonstrates a commitment to quickly and cost-effectively deploy advanced digital television features and functionality that operators need to provide differentiated services."

"We're pleased with the growth of our relationship with OpenTV and feel that their vision of advanced user interfaces for television aligns well with our product development roadmaps," said John Gleiter, Senior Director of Marketing for Broadcom's Set-Top Box line of business. "A complete team effort has already begun with OpenTV that will allow both companies to enable the next generation products that will enhance the end user experience in the areas of broadcast video, video-on-demand and personal video recording."

In addition to the collaboration efforts between Broadcom and OpenTV, a variety of high definition and standard definition digital video/audio system-on-a-chip solutions from Broadcom have passed OpenTV's rigorous verification testing system (VTS). The Broadcom chips that are now OpenTV-certified include the:

-- BCM7401 high definition AVC/VC-1/MPEG-2 digital video system-on-a-chip
(SoC) with watch/record DVR
-- BCM7402 high definition AVC/VC-1/MPEG-2 digital video SoC
-- BCM7018 standard definition AVC/VC-1/MPEG-2 video decoder (with
DOCSIS(R) 2.0 and downstream channel bonding)

Broadcom will be demonstrating advanced high definition PVR capabilities at this year's IBC2007 Show in Amsterdam. The platform is based on OpenTV Core2 and OpenTV PVR2(TM) software, working in conjunction with the Broadcom BCM7401 SoC solution, reinforcing a strong partnership between both companies that will help to enable better viewing experiences for consumers of digital content.
