Santa Monica-Based Composers Energize New DDB San Francisco Spot With '60s Sound

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Santa Monica-based music composers, Tobias Johnston and Michael B. Coulter, today announced that their company Confidence Head was used by ad agency DDB San Francisco to create music for the national "Hidden Valley Ranch" advertising spot. This was the first time Confidence Head worked directly with this DDB team; though they have worked with the team's group creative director, Chad Ackley, on spots for Clorox Bleach and Armor All.

For "Hidden Valley Ranch", DDB San Francisco challenged Confidence Head to compose music with a '60s feel and style. The spot contained no lyrics, forcing Johnston and Coulter to devise a vocal melody that could carry the music and that could capture the sense of fun that the visuals created.

"I've worked with Confidence Head on three commercials now, and each time they give us something wonderfully unique and spot on. Hidden Valley Ranch was no exception," said DDB San Francisco's group creative director Chad Ackley. "Mike and Toby enjoy a tight cohesion as well as a gift for music. Their combined efforts and talents infuse their compositions with a creativity and depth that really shows in their work."

The two composers have worked together as Confidence Head since 2001. Their work includes spots for HP, Chevy, Toshiba, Verizon, Sprint, HBO, Atari and more. Primarily focused on advertising, Confidence Head is known for combining real-world experiences with formal training in many musical styles and genres to create completely unique compositions.
