Evan Hertrick to Receive Pittsburgh Jazz Society/Mellon Jazz Scholarship at Reservoir of Jazz Concert

PITTSBURGH, July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pittsburgh Jazz Society and The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation today announced the selection of Evan Hertrick as the recipient of the 2007 Pittsburgh Jazz Society/Mellon Jazz Scholarship. A senior at Youngstown State University, Hertrick will receive his scholarship award from Pittsburgh Jazz Society founder Tony Mowod prior to the Reservoir of Jazz Concert in the City of Pittsburgh's Highland Park at 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 12, 2007.

Chosen by a panel of nationally recognized jazz musicians and educators on the basis of his scholarship application and accompanying audition tape, Hertrick will receive a $5,000 award from the Pittsburgh Jazz Society and The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation.

Son of Dale and Sharon Hertrick of Penn Hills, this year's Pittsburgh Jazz Society/Mellon Jazz Scholarship recipient is returning to Youngstown State for his senior year this fall. Hertrick plays the bassoon and tenor saxophone, and is accomplished as both a jazz and classical musician. Drum major for the Youngstown State marching band, Hertrick also excels in the classroom, maintaining a 3.97 grade point average as a music education major. A graduate of the Pittsburgh School System's Creative and Performing Arts middle and high schools, Hertrick is a past member of the Pittsburgh Jazz Society Band and Pittsburgh Youth Symphony.

"Evan Hertrick is a great example of the good work being done by the Pittsburgh jazz community encouraging young people to renew and strengthen this region's strong jazz tradition," said Rose M. Gabbianelli, executive vice president and director of public affairs for The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation. "Student aid is a wonderful way to continue that tradition, and we're pleased to advance the Pittsburgh Jazz Society's scholarship program," Gabbianelli said. "Evan's the cream of a very large crop of 2007 scholarship applicants," said Tony Mowod, founder and president of the Pittsburgh Jazz Society and executive producer and jazz host of WDUQ 90.5 FM. "Scholarship assistance is an important part of our jazz education program, and we're grateful to The Bank of New York Mellon for their continuing support," Mowod said.
