New User-Generated Service Boosts Online Video Pioneer's Web Audience
SAN FRANCISCO, June 27 /PRNewswire/ -- AtomFilms, a division of Viacom's (NYSE:VIA)(NYSE:and)(NYSE:VIA.B) MTVN Entertainment Group, doubled its US audience during the month of May, driven by the launch of its new user-generated-content community, AtomUploads. The new service offers creators the ability to post and share their video and animation content, with the most successful uploads earning the attention of development and programming staff at AtomFilms and COMEDY CENTRAL. ComScore Media Metrix reported that AtomFilms attracted 2.23 million unique users in May, up from 1.08 million in April, and that worldwide traffic in May reached 4.35 million unique users. Other key metrics also showed strong gains, with pageviews increasing 120% in May to 22 million.
"AtomUploads builds on our longtime mission of finding and empowering top independent entertainment creators," said AtomFilms vice president and general manager Scott Roesch. "The May numbers show that the Atom audience is excited to have the opportunity to share their own content, help us find new talent and launch the next big Web hits."
AtomUploads features a weekly "Upload Showdown" competition that pits two of the site's most successful and entertaining titles -- as evidenced by viewer feedback -- against one another. The titles that earn the audience's approval make the leap to the award-winning AtomFilms site, where the creators are offered commercial distribution deals that pay royalties based on advertising and distribution revenues. Atom's revenue-sharing program, the first of its kind in the industry, has paid out millions of dollars to independent creators.
As part of the MTVN Entertainment Group, Atom has a direct conduit to leading television networks such as Comedy Central, Spike TV and other MTV properties. Currently, AtomFilms and AtomUploads are partnering with Comedy Central on "Comedy Central Test Pilots," an online competition in which entrants upload one-to-five-minute pilots in hopes of turning them into the next big broadband series. The Grand Prize winner will earn a $5,000 cash prize and the potential for a development deal with Comedy Central to produce an episodic broadband series.
With the launch of AtomUploads in May 2007, MTV Networks phased out the AddictingClips user-generated video community.
