Veteran TV Reporter, Bill Proctor, Puts Career on Hold to Find a Killer and Free an Innocent Man From Prison

Veteran TV Reporter, Bill Proctor, Puts Career on Hold to Find a Killer and Free an Innocent Man From Prison

Authorities denying new evidence that could free a man wrongly convicted in crime

DETROIT, May 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Bill Proctor, of Detroit's ABC affiliate, WXYZ TV, will soon be missing from his long-time position as Senior Staff Reporter on the station's morning newscast. On May 31st, Proctor will begin a special unpaid leave of absence -- a journey -- to pursue what has become a day-by-day personal crusade for justice.

More than a dozen years ago, Proctor produced a series of reports for WXYZ TV's Action News on the broad daylight murder of 21-year-old Scott Macklem of Croswell, MI. The young college student and expectant father was cut down in the parking lot of St. Claire County Community College in Port Huron around 9am, November 5th, 1986. His father was Croswell's mayor at the time.

The St. Claire County Prosecutor's Office chose to focus on just one suspect, Fredrick Freeman, the ex-lover of Scott's fiance, despite numerous potential leads found by police. Although more than a dozen witnesses placed Freeman in or near Escanaba, some 460 miles away from the murder scene in Port Huron, Fredrick Freeman was convicted of 1st degree murder in May of 1987. Even after Proctor and WXYZ provided an MSP-experienced polygraph examiner for Freeman, and watched him pass the test, Michigan's criminal justice system has ignored his plea of innocence. As late as early May 2007, the State Attorney General chose to ignore new information on the real murder conspiracy.

With the help of some experienced investigators, lawyers, student journalists and a host of other volunteers, Proctor has identified several scenarios police detectives in Port Huron chose not to follow back then, including a man who now says he was involved in a plot to kill Macklem, and why.

"Two men threatened young Scott Macklem on his job at a men's clothing store in the months and weeks before the murder", says Proctor. "There are other facets of Scott's life that were never investigated. People close to the victim can help our investigative team identify who fired the fatal shot. We firmly believe what has been kept secret about Scott's activities on campus and elsewhere can help lead us to the killer and his accomplices. Only then will an innocent Freeman be released."

ABC's Prime Time has taken an interest in our efforts to free the innocent man now known as Temujin Kensu, and also in the efforts of our retired FBI agents and detectives who have put in hundreds of pro-bono hours to investigate and validate our theories.

For the first time, all of the eight men and woman who have worked this case for more than 15 years, along with the wife of the man who is wrongly incarcerated, will be assembled at the same location for a press conference:

Thanks to Crime Stoppers, the people who've been reluctant to help before can now provide their insight anonymously. We need to paint an accurate picture of Scott Macklem to find his killer. A reward of up to $1,000 has been offered. People with information can call Crime Stoppers at 800/Speak-Up.

"I've stepped up the fight to save what's left of a man's life, and to find a killer who's been free for more than 20 years," says Proctor. Bill Proctor can be reached via cell phone for comment at 248/736-4089.
