Profile America -- Friday, May 18th. One of the most popular American novels ever written was published this week in 1936 Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With The Wind." The epic novel of the Civil War won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award as best novel. Three years after its debut, "Gone With The Wind" was made into a blockbuster motion picture starring Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh. The movie won an unprecedented eight Academy Awards, including best picture in a year in which many other movies considered to be classics were produced. Mitchell's novel has been continuously in print since 1936 and will be part of the $3.2 billion worth of books projected to be sold this year.
