Turn Up the Volume on Downtown Detroit Summer Fun

GM's Rockin' on the Riverfront returns with free Friday night concert series

DETROIT, May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Back by popular demand and bigger and better than ever, the "Rockin' On the Riverfront" concert series presented by General Motors returns to the spectacular GM Riverfront Plaza located behind the GM Renaissance Center. Starting June 29, the Plaza will be THE downtown destination every Friday night for an all-star line-up of free classic rock concerts.

The GM "Rockin' On The Riverfront" concert series, in conjunction with 94.7 WCSX, Detroit's Classic Rock Station, will feature seven classic rock headliners every Friday night from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., and will run through Aug. 10.

Kicking off the series on June 29 will be the legendary '70s Michigan rock band, Grand Funk Railroad, whose multiple hits include, "We're An American Band," "Some Kind Of Wonderful" and "The Loco-Motion."

Other bands to perform throughout the summer will include: the Reunion of Asia (July 6), Marshall Crenshaw (July 13), The Guess Who (July 20), Detroit's own The Romantics (July 27), Eric Burdon and the Animals (Aug. 3) and .38 Special (Aug. 10)

"GM is excited to host this concert series on the Riverfront Plaza for the second year," said Matt Cullen, general manager, Economic Development and Enterprise Services for General Motors. "The riverfront, with its spectacular view, is the perfect venue to enjoy the best classic rock bands of our time and we invite everyone to join us for the experience."

Admission to the concerts is free and no advance tickets are necessary. Viewing space will be on a first-come, first-serve basis and people are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. In addition, boaters on the Detroit River are invited to anchor near the riverfront and enjoy the view of the stage from the water.

Refreshments and a variety of food concessions will be available at several locations on the plaza. Outside food, beverages or coolers will not be permitted. Additionally, pre-concert dinner options are available at the GM Renaissance Center's three hottest restaurants - Coach Insignia, Andiamo Riverfront and Seldom Blues. Special promotions will be announced soon.

Convenient parking is available for $10 per vehicle at the surface lot at the intersection of St. Antoine and Atwater, adjacent to the GM Renaissance Center. Valet parking is available at the GM Wintergarden.

WCSX radio personality, Steve Kostan, will be broadcasting live from all concerts and will interview band members and Detroit celebrities prior to each concert.
