NEW YORK, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Sullivan & Cromwell LLP today announced that litigation partner Samuel W. Seymour will be the recipient of the 2007 John J. McCloy Award, which recognizes lawyers who have made outstanding contributions to improving the administration of justice in New York State. The award was announced by Victor A. Kovner, the Chair of the Fund for Modern Courts and will be presented by the Chief Judge of the State of New York, Judith S. Kaye, at a reception later today.
Mr. Kovner said that, "Mr. Seymour's commitment to improving the administration of justice reaches back to when he served as a law school summer intern at Modern Courts. Now a Director of Modern Courts, he has provided unflagging support for its reform agenda." Founded in 1955, the Fund for Modern Courts is devoted exclusively to improving the judicial system in New York State.
The McCloy Award is named in honor of John J. McCloy, who served as Chair of the Fund and Committee for Modern Courts from 1961 to 1978, in recognition of his exceptional record of public service. Previous recipients of the McCloy Award are Hon. Joseph W. Bellacosa, Sheila L. Birnbaum, Hon. Hugh L. Carey, Dean John D. Feerick, Hon. Hugh R. Jones, Jr., Robert M. Kaufman, Hon. Edward I. Koch, Victor A. Kovner, Robert D. Joffe, Robert MacCrate, Bettina B. Plevan, Roy L. Reardon, Fern Schair and Hon. Cyrus R. Vance.
Mr. Seymour specializes in white-collar criminal defense, regulatory enforcement matters, and internal investigations. He advises global financial institutions, industrial companies and individual officers and directors in government and internal investigations. One of the top white-collar criminal defense and commercial litigators in the United States, he has been recognized by peer publications such as Chambers USA, America's Leading Lawyers for Business and The Best Lawyers in America. After joining Sullivan & Cromwell in 1982, he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and Deputy Chief Appellate Attorney in the Southern District of New York (1988 - 1991), and re-joined the firm in 1991.
Mr. Seymour also serves as a panel chairman on the Departmental Disciplinary Committee, First Department; is a Director of the Office of the Appellate Defender; and has represented scores of indigent criminal defendants pro bono in the federal courts. He is Chair of the Board of Directors of the City Bar Justice Center, a former Vice President and Chair of the Executive Committee of the New York City Bar Association, a member of American Law Institute, and a trustee of the Practising Law Institute. Mr. Seymour also serves on the Board of Visitors at his alma mater, Columbia Law School.
