Steve Kroft of '60 Minutes' Receives the Fred Friendly First Amendment Award From Quinnipiac University on May 21

NEW YORK, May 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Quinnipiac University presented its 14th annual Fred Friendly First Amendment Award to Steve Kroft of "60 Minutes" today at an invitation-only luncheon at The Metropolitan Club.

Named after the legendary former CBS News president, the award acknowledges one of the most basic constitutional rights and honors those who have shown courage and forthrightness in preserving that right. Ruth Friendly, the wife of the late Fred Friendly, and Quinnipiac President John L. Lahey presented the award to Kroft before a room full of several of the top names in broadcasting.

"If I had not come under Fred's spell, and that is the best way to put it, I'm not sure I would have done much to merit inclusion," said Kroft, addressing the 150 guests in attendance. "He was one of the reasons I got into journalism and one of my earliest mentors."

Several of Kroft's "60 Minutes" colleagues attended the luncheon, including Jeffrey Fager, executive producer of "60 Minutes," Don Hewitt, the former executive producer of "60 Minutes," and correspondents Andy Rooney, Morley Safer and Lesley Stahl. Bob Schieffer, the former anchor of "The CBS Evening News," and Charles Osgood, anchor of "CBS News Sunday Morning," also came. Hewitt, Schieffer and Stahl are all past recipients of the Fred Friendly First Amendment Award.

Other past recipients of the award are: Dan Rather, Bill Moyers, Ted Koppel, Tom Brokaw, Jim Lehrer, Robert MacNeil, Peter Jennings, Mike Wallace, Christiane Amanpour, Tom Bettag and Tim Russert.
