Schieffer vs. Snow in Mega-Media 'Battle of the Bands' May 14 at National Press Club
Event Kicks Off NPC at 100 - Centennial Challenge Campaign
WASHINGTON, May 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- White House press secretary Tony Snow and his band, Beats Workin', will face off against legendary CBS newsman Bob Schieffer and Honky Tonk Confidential at the National Press Club's first-ever battle of the bands, "Honky Tonk Meets the White House Wonk," at the Club on May 14.
The inaugural showdown will kick off the Club's countdown to its 2008 centennial celebration.
"This is an incredibly generous thing for Tony and Bob to do," said NPC President Jerry Zremski. "I can think of no better way for the NPC to kick off its centennial countdown than with these two giants of media and government."
Schieffer will appear with Honky Tonk Confidential -- just as he did on the award-winning country-western band's new CD, "Road Kill Stew and Other News." Schieffer wrote the lyrics to four of the songs on the album and sang one, called "TV Anchorman." http://www.honkytonkconfidential.com/audio.html
Snow plays flute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1PEyzk4ADU and guitar in Beats Workin'. "What do you get when you combine four lawyers, a realtor, a business executive, a press secretary, some oldies, a dance-crazy crowd, and a whole lot of fun? We're not sure, but we know it...Beats Workin'," says the band's web site.
The event will take place two weeks after Snow's return to the White House following treatment for a recurrence of cancer. Noting that Schieffer, like Snow, is a cancer survivor, Zremski said: "This will be more than a night of great rock and honky tonk. It will be a celebration of the human spirit."
A reception in the Holeman Lounge at 7 p.m. will feature an open bar and appetizers prepared by NPC chef Jim Swenson. The bands will fire up their battle instruments at 8 p.m. in the ballroom, which will be done up with a dance floor and seating for those who enjoyed the open bar.
The event will serve as a fundraiser for the Club's non-profit Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library, which will launch its "NPC at 100 Centennial Challenge Campaign" at the event.
The campaign aims to raise funds to produce the Club's centennial documentary, "A Century of Headlines," and to promote it to educational institutions across the country. The library will be preparing an educational curriculum to accompany the film that will showcase the National Press Club's historic role in the evolution of Washington journalism.
Tickets to "Honky Tonk Meets the White House Wonk" are $50 for NPC members and their guests and $60 for the general public; $37.50 of each member-price ticket is tax-deductible. ($45 of each $60 ticket is deductible). Reserve by calling 202-662-7501.
