Latest Study Shows High Gas Prices Affecting Consumer Shopping Behavior
With gas prices reaching their highest level in recent history, three dollars and ten cents a gallon for regular unleaded, a majority of consumers plan to take steps to combat the hit to their wallets. According to the latest Kelley Blue Book Marketing Research study on gas price effects, half of new vehicle shoppers plan to purchase less retail items such as clothes and shoes, more than a third plan to eat out less often, and another third plan to buy less media entertainment items as long as gas prices continue to squeeze their wallets. Luxuries like a night out on the town, music sales, as well as movie ticket sales could all experience declines through the summer when gas prices are expected to top four dollars a gallon.

Super Rich Plan to Increase Spending According to New Elite Traveler/Prince & Associates Summer Spending Survey
While the mortgage meltdown and rising gas prices are causing many Americans to tighten their belts this summer, those in the ultra-affluent segment are expected to escalate their expenditures. This includes everything from vacations and entertaining to apparel, jewelry, watches and electronics. According to the 2007 Elite Traveler/Prince & Associates Summer Spending Survey, the Elite Affluent -- those "super rich" consumers whose household net worth tops 10 million dollars -- will be increasing their summer spending by 55 percent this year over summer 2005. Beneficiaries of their dollars include luxury cruise lines and resorts, high-end watchmakers and manufacturers of designer apparel, accessories and electronics. According to the survey of 198 High Net Worth families conducted at the beginning of May, spending across 17 luxury categories will increase to 622,202 dollars per household, from 399,187 dollars during the summer period.
