WASHINGTON, May 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Popular television actress Christa Miller signs on as spokesperson of the national "Wear It!" campaign -- a promotional initiative designed to encourage America's 77 million plus recreational boaters to wear a life jacket at all times while on the water. The campaign is strategically positioned during National Safe Boating Week (NSBW), a lead-in to Memorial Day Weekend, one of the highest activity boating weekends of the year.

A regular on NBC's comedy hit, Scrubs, and mom of three, Miller lends her voice to ask the women and moms of families in communities across America to be proactive about making sure their family members and friends wear -- and don't just stow -- their life jackets. "It only takes a second to put on your life jacket -- that second could save your life or the life of someone you love," says Miller.

To initiate a national dialogue around life jacket wear, Miller invites boaters to enter the "Wear It!" - Be a Survivor! contest, a summer-long initiative that encourages recreational boaters of all ages to submit their personal stories on how the life jacket has made a difference in their boating experiences. Entry forms are now available online at http://www.safeboatingcampaign.com/, as well as in all 385 West Marine(R) stores nationwide.

"We are grateful for the continued partnership with West Marine(R) and the generous support of actress Christa Miller, whose visibility and desire to make a difference in the safety of families on the water will ensure that our messages reach an ever-growing number of recreational boaters," says Virgil Chambers, Executive Director of the National Safe Boating Council, the organization which produces the campaign.

The latest U.S. Coast Guard statistics indicate that in 2005, approximately 87 percent of boaters who drowned were not wearing life jackets.
