Nominated for five Academy Awards(R), Stewart earned a Best Actor statuette for "Philadelphia Story," as well as an honorary Oscar for fifty years of memorable performances and an AFI Lifetime Achievement Award. He was honored by the Kennedy Center for his contribution to American culture, named Best Classic Actor of the 20th Century by Entertainment Weekly and placed third on AFI's list of 50 greatest actors of all time. The three-disc set is priced at $26.98. Preorder close is May 8, 2007.
SYNOPSES
"Next Time We Love"
A young couple's fledgling marriage falters as they struggle to balance career and commitment in a perceptively modern drama. Actress Cicely Tyler (Margaret Sullavan) plans to put aside her Broadway ambitions when she marries ambitious reporter Christopher Tyler (James Stewart), but a former beau (Ray Milland) makes her an offer she can't refuse. Just as she gets her big break, her husband is assigned to his paper's Rome bureau. As they struggle to keep their marriage together, their love is tested by career choices that keep them far apart.
"You Gotta Stay Happy"
Pilot Marvin Payne (James Stewart) reluctantly gives shelter to dizzy heiress Dee Dee Dillwood (Joan Fontaine) in a delightful screwball comedy full of romance and mirth. Dee Dee gets cold feet on her wedding night and flees from her new hubby to an adjoining hotel room. Marvin, the room's rightful occupant, agrees to help her hide for an evening. Opposites attract and the laughs multiply as Dee Dee and Marvin fall madly in love and embark on a hilarious cross-country flight with a motley crew of fellow passengers including an embezzler on the run and a cigar-smoking chimp!
"Thunder Bay"
A pair of ambitious ex-GIs arrives on the Louisiana coast with a plan to revolutionize the oil business, but they must overcome the opposition of locals to make their dream a reality. Steve Martin (James Stewart) and his partner Johnny Gambi (Dan Duryea) are willing to risk everything, including their lives, to prove they can build a safe platform for offshore drilling. The adventurous wildcatters face down a devastating hurricane, sabotage and a hostile town of Cajun fishermen before they strike black gold in this explosive adventure.
"The Glenn Miller Story"
James Stewart plays swing era icon Glenn Miller in this Oscar(R)-winning musical biography of an American original. The film follows the legendary big band leader from his hardscrabble beginnings through his rise to the pinnacle of popular success in the 1940s. With June Allyson as his wife Helen and a score that includes original Miller music performed by his chart-topping orchestra, The Glen Miller Story also features performances by Louis Armstrong, Gene Krupa, Frances Langford and The Modernaires.
"Shenandoah"
Wealthy Virginia farmer Charlie Anderson (James Stewart) refuses to take sides in the Civil War until the battle becomes personal. Opposed to both war and slavery, Anderson remains neutral until Union soldiers imprison his youngest son. As he sets forth to rescue his boy, he discovers the heartbreaking consequences of the brutal conflict firsthand and is at last forced to take a stand in this powerful anti-war epic.
