American Idol Songwriter Contest a Flop With Amateur Songwriters?

American Idol Songwriter Contest a Flop With Amateur Songwriters?

A Statement Issued by Timothy Brandon

LOS ANGELES, May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- I'll bet $50,000 my song is better than the song picked by American Idol. WHY?

If you want to know how amateur songwriters feel about the American Idol Songwriter contest, just drop in on the Spinme.com or American Idol bulletin boards. Hundreds of songwriter entrants are unhappy with the finalists chosen by the Idol judges. Where is that 50-year-old mom sitting in her living room with a portable keyboard? Where is the poorly arranged gem they thought had a chance or that totally unknown songwriter toiling away in their basement?

They are nice songs, hey; many of them would be great in movies, but commercially popular recordings? Now, don't blame the songwriters. The finalists were just giving American Idol what they apparently wanted. Good luck to them.

But when will American Idol really look for commercially popular songs for the winning contestants? Every week, American Idol asks the contestants to take big risks. Yet, every season, they take a highly conservative road and actively search for a song that is about an eagle soaring, that big moment, their time in the sun, etc.

I was expecting more songs focusing on the singers pursuing their dreams - the singers that really want to sing so much that they subject themselves to fierce judging and criticism every week. When will American Idol take the same risks that they ask their contestants to take each season?

So here is one more chance. Hello, American Idol? My $50,000 v. your $50,000! My song vs. your song. The winner keeps their money - the loser's money goes to charity. And I saw yours so here is mine: My Window - http://www.myspace.com/songwritingrejecttimothybrandon

I don't expect you to call. Too much risk for the show. But drop me an email anyway because I reviewed over 250-300 of the entries and, boy, did you miss an opportunity.
