National Congress of Black Women, Inc. Announces 'Women Honoring Women' Week

National Congress of Black Women, Inc. Announces 'Women Honoring Women' Week

When: May 1, 2007

CHICAGO, April 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- For nearly 15 years, the National Congress of Black Women, Inc. (NCBW) under the leadership of the late Dr. C. DeLores Tucker, undertook the awesome job of eliminating indecent lyrics about women from the public airwaves.

After Dr. Tucker passed away in 2005, Dr. E. Faye Williams, Esq., who had served as Dr. Tucker's General Counsel, became National Chair of NCBW, and has carried on the work started by Dr. Tucker.

On Tuesday, April 24, 2007, Dr. Williams was a guest on the "Roland Martin Show" on Radio Station WVON and announced the next step in an ongoing program of honoring women of achievement. She said that beginning May 1, 2007, NCBW will begin a week long event of "Women Honoring Women" across the nation. During that week from May 1st through Mother's Day, she is calling upon women to wear something red (the color of love) each day to say "I love, honor and respect myself first, my mother, grandmother, sisters, daughters, aunts, nieces, cousins, girlfriends, and co-workers, too."

She said, "We women must begin loving, honoring and respecting ourselves and each other because if we don't love and respect ourselves, we cannot attract the love and respect of others. As my friend Dick Gregory always says, 'In order to be loved, we must first be lovable'. I would add that in order to be respected, we must first be respectable, and to deserve honor, we must be honorable."

Each day of the week of "Women Honoring Women", women are asked to consciously display at least one act of love, honor or respect for self and another for a significant woman in their lives. This can be a mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, niece, cousin, friend, or co-worker.

Each day at noon, during the week of May 1st through Mother's Day, women are asked to pray for others to love, honor and respect women.

Williams said, "The members of NCBW are asked to join the NCBW Board of Directors in fasting for the entire week in order to cleanse our minds and bodies of any impure thoughts and actions, so that we begin the week after Mother's Day with clean hearts and spirits ready to work together to take on any forces in our nation that insist upon exploiting women and the minds and talents of young people. We invite others to join us, and the steps will be posted on our website at www.npcbw.org."

Several years ago, NCBW began the practice of purchasing shares in companies that promote and sponsor indecent lyrics about women in order to be able to attend shareholders meetings and read the indecent, obscene, misogynistic words to the shareholders. Williams said, "We've increased our shares to include more companies, and will be announcing how we plan to use our enormous buying power, political power and stockholdings to prevent continuing exploitation and disrespect of women, our children and young adults who believe they have no alternative for their lives. At the same time, we will continue to work to provide options for young people who want to do conscious music and dance, and who want to do positive things with their lives. At the end of our week of 'Women Honoring Women', we will announce our next step because women are 'sick and tired of being sick and tired'."
