The Alliance for Equal Access Applauds the Georgia General Assembly's Passage of the Cable Choice Act
ATLANTA, April 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The State of Georgia is on the verge of joining 11 other states that have adopted video franchise reform legislation following the unanimous passage of the Consumer Choice for Television Act late last Friday afternoon. Georgia House Bill 227 passed with a vote of 146-to-0.
This legislation paves the way for a more competitive environment in telecommunications services throughout the state. Many legislators reported that they received strong feedback from their constituents in favor of this legislation, and felt the need for swift action in the face of rising telecommunications costs was the most appropriate way to proceed.
The Alliance for Equal Access - a bipartisan consumer advocacy organization, applauds the Georgia General Assembly on this definitive vote, which will pave the way to lower the cost of cable and broadband services for consumers, particularly those in underserved communities.
Julius H. Hollis, Chairman of the Alliance for Equal Access, said in a statement that "Clearly, the voices of Georgia's millions of cable television subscribers have been heard, and with this vote, financial relief and access to improved services are on the way throughout the state. It's very impressive to witness such strong bipartisan support for proposed legislation like this, which can only mean that the members of the General Assembly had the best interests of their constituents in mind."
Economic studies have repeatedly shown that competition lowers cable rates and encourages investment in new technologies, but even more importantly, competition empowers consumers to choose their provider and shop for better prices and service.
