Semiconductor Manufacturers Gain Ability to Integrate DTV Chips With New ATSC Core From Iberium Communications

Turnkey VSB/QAM Demodulator Core Created by Team of DTV Veterans Supports Highly Integrated DTV Solutions

DOYLESTOWN, Pa., March 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Iberium Communications, a provider of digital television demodulation intellectual property, announced today availability of its North American Digital Demodulator core, which enables semiconductor manufacturers to quickly integrate complex receiver technology into digital televisions and other mass-market DTV products.

"This technology cuts years off the product-development cycle," said Tom Bentson, vice president of sales and marketing for Iberium Communications.

Iberium's core offers superior performance for both ATSC over-the-air and QAM cable signals. A hardware-based prototype of the core was successfully demonstrated by the company during this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Any semiconductor manufacturer planning to integrate components in the burgeoning DTV space must have access to high-performing digital demodulators to deliver the robust reception demanded by consumers, according to Bentson.

"In DTV, it's all about the picture, and a high-performing demodulator means a more reliable picture," Bentson said.

Bentson added that only a small number of chipmakers have developed top- tier demodulator technology and those manufacturers have gained majority market share. Other companies find there is a shortage of ATSC IP in the market, especially high-quality demodulator IP.

"It is just too expensive, and too risky, for most silicon providers to develop ATSC demodulation technology from the ground up. Given the complexities of the ATSC standard, developing a high-quality receiver can take years," Bentson said.

Iberium, he said, has developed its VSB/QAM demodulator core to give silicon providers the ability to cost-effectively enter the ATSC market and integrate a turnkey, best-of-breed demodulator with their DTV components.

"Cost-effective integration of IP requires a complete design and support package. It seems obvious, but it's not very common in the IP market," Bentson said.

"Because there is fierce price competition in the integrated DTV market, it's become increasingly more expensive for silicon companies not to have demodulator capability that can be fully integrated with back-end DTV components," he said.
